What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda or Science of life is a holistic medical system from India. It is one of the oldest continuously practiced medical systems on the planet dating over 5500 years old. It was designed by the yogis and seers to allow for maximum longevity, health and happiness. It seeks to harmonize the body, mind and life force based on a number of principles in nature, relative to each individual’s genetic constitution and present state of health or dis-ease.

Ayurveda is another way to look at your body and your health, that is simple and practical. What I find so amazing is that once we understand our true nature or “dosha”, which doesn’t change from birth, it is fairly typical how we go out of balance, the signs of imbalance, and how we can be brought back into balance. It focuses on preventing disease, optimizing vitality as much as removing disease.

By understanding one’s basic constitution and present condition according to Ayurveda, we can customize a lifestyle plan for optimum health, peace of mind, and longevity. We will utilize a number of different modalities such as dietary recommendations, herbs, botanicals, exercise & yoga poses, breathing techniques, meditation, essential oils, music, colors etc.

Through this personalized approach many are discovering that these ancient principles are easily applicable to modern life and that they have the power to create health and contentment.

Doshas

The three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, are derived from the five elements of nature, which are: Space (akasha), Air (vayu), Fire (tejas), Water (jala), and Earth (prithivi).

About Tracy

Tracy OffMother, sister, friend, companion, athlete, and forever student. Schooling: BA in Psych, AS in Architecture. Internship in Ayurveda with Mela Gaskins Butcher of the Center for Ayurveda.

I have been passionate about holistic medicine and the power to heal myself since reading three powerful books in 2000, Beating Cancer with Nutrition by Patrick Quillin Phd. RD. CNS, Molecules of Emotion by Candice Pert Phd, and The Biology of Belief by Bruce Lipton PhD. All three of these giving me the guidance to take control of my future health.

Up to that point I felt cancer was inevitable as many of my family members had died of cancer. My belief was cancer, like so many other diseases, was genetic, There was no personal control, or responsibility for my future story. What an epiphany to learn that my old belief wasn’t true at all. Due to epigenetics I had the power to turn on or off my genes, and therefore facilitate my health through my own actions.

Since then I have been learning about and applying holistic approaches to my own health, many times in tandem with allopathic medicine, for my own health challenges. Learning how I got into the state I was in, and how to get out of it.

At a career turning point I started looking for my next life chapter where I could help people thru practical holistic approaches to healing. I wanted to be part of the new healing paradigm that is now forming in medicine. Something that would inspire me for the next 30+ years of my life. I found that in Ayurveda.

I became a student & patient of Mela Gaskin Butcher’s in 2011, learning Ayurveda thru healing myself. It has been an eye opener, and a wonderful shift in my understanding of how my mind, body and spirit work together; all in relationship to nature. I find it simple & practical, beautifully down to earth, inspiring, and adaptable to everyone everywhere.

In 2014 I became an intern of Ayurveda thru my teacher Mela Gaskins Butcher of Center for Ayurveda. I believe she says it best on what type of education her program provides for their interns:

Training at the Center for Ayurveda is unique in that it certifies its practitioners in the classic and ancient style of one on one teacher-student training.

For centuries, the medical, spiritual, intellectual, and ethical curricula has been handed down in the Guru Kula tradition; a tradition in which the presiding teacher takes responsibility for the academic, as well as the personal and spiritual training of the student.

This one-on-one training is nearly extinct, and as far as we know we are the only institution in the United States honoring this time tested method of passing down the great body of knowledge known as Yoga and Ayurveda.

In the Center for Ayurveda the students are chosen for their high intelligence, sensitivity, humility and capacity to embody the Ayurvedic ideals in thought, word and deed. A true healer is a rare find, and we work closely with our students to oversee their personal development, as well as instructing and providing real life experience in what is required for masterful Ayurvedic counseling. Our lineage is from Paramahansa Yogananda, who brought Yoga to the United States in the 1920’s.

As a graduate I have completed a training of 24 months, with an additional 25 weeks of shadowing patients.

And here I am today ready and welling to be a part of your path to better health, mind and body. Ayurveda is as applicable today as it has been for the last 5500 years. Let this practical Science of Life inspire you to a harmonious life, no matter where you live or what you do.
